HANDLING, STORAGE, AND ACCLIMATION
New hardwood flooring should not be stored in a garage, outside, or in a home or building that is not properly climate controlled. Storing in environments other than a controlled environment will cause the wood to gain or lose moisture. Most new hardwood flooring is ready to install and does not require acclimation.
RECOMMENDED SUBFLOOR SURFACES
If you have a concrete subfloors, ensure that it meets requirements for the adhesive or adhesive system selected.
For wood subfloors, use 3⁄4” CDX grade plywood or a minimum of 5/8” CDX plywood.
Test the moisture content of the wood subfloor and wood flooring with a pin type moisture meter. Wood subfloors must not exceed 12% and the wood flooring should be within 3% of the wood subfloor.
PREPARING FOR INSTALLATION
Inspect the flooring material for color, finish, milling, and grade. Hold out pieces that may not be acceptable once installed.
Undercut all door casings 1/16" higher than the thickness of the flooring being installed.
To achieve a uniform appearance across the entire floor, we recommend that you open and work from several cartons at a time as you layout the flooring. This will allow you to blend the planks for maximum aesthetic appearance. Make certain the room is well lit to ensure color is consistent and that any visual defects can be seen and removed.
Blend all transitions and moldings to planks that have similar color and graining for best appearance. Set them aside for use as needed.
Laying out the flooring or “Racking the floor” is essential to achieve a random appearance. Randomly install different lengths to avoid a patterned appearance. Allow a minimum 5/8” expansion around all vertical obstructions.
GLUE DOWN INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
Engineered Floors: Please use one of the recommended adhesive products.
Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s installation instructions for the testing of subfloor moisture content. Choose an adhesive and (if necessary) moisture barrier system that is warranted by the adhesive manufacturer for installation under those circumstances.
COMPLETING THE JOB
Sweep or vacuum floor. Clean the floor with Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner. Install transition pieces -i.e. – thresholds, t-moldings, baseboards and quarter round. Nail moldings to wall, not the floor. Inspect final floor for nicks and or minor gaps – fill with appropriate color wood putty

ENGINEERED HARDWOOD FLOORS
ENGINEERED HARDWOOD FLOORS
Engineered hardwood floors are our specialty. They provide several important advantages over solid hardwood; finish-durability, ease and cost of installation, and dimensional stability.
Today’s engineered hardwood floors offer urethane, aluminum oxide, ceramic oxide, UV-cured oil and thermally-cured oil finishes that all offer distinct advantages. The finishes are applied in a controlled factory environment which leads to a more durable & even finish than one which is applied on site. Multi step finishes can also be produced in a much more practical manner with beauty and sophistication that surpasses even the most labor intense on-site finish. A floor with a factory applied finish installs more quickly and it doesn’t involve the dust and odors that an on-site finish produces. With a pre-finished floor you know what you are getting instead of rolling the dice with an on-site finish.
Engineered floors can be glued down directly to the concrete slab instead of adding a plywood subfloor. A plywood subfloor will add to the overall height & cost of the floor installation.
When temperature or humidity changes, woods expand and contract. Engineered floors have a cross laminated or cross directional core. It is this substrate/core that provides the structural stability that prevents the board from warping, twisting, cupping and cracking.
Hardwood floors come in a variety of styles. Whether your home is transitional, contemporary, modern, rustic, traditional, or craftsman, the proper hardwood floor will enhance your space and bring together all other aspects of your home.
Certainly each style, color, and texture will present a specific feel & look which one of our flooring experts can help you decide on.
Hand-scraped floors offer an exceptionally striking, one-of-a-kind look. Each premium plank is uniquely hand-scraped by machine or by an experienced craftsmen, whose creativity combined with nature, assures that no two planks are the same. Each plank proudly bears the signature of the craftsman who created it.
Wire brushed floors offer a subtle texture to a floor while maintaining a smooth appearance. Wire brushing pulls the soft grain from the growth ring leaving the heart wood exposed to the surface. This helps create a more durable floor that is able to mask mis-haps from everyday occurrences.
Various techniques are used to produce weathered and worn color effects, textures and subtle character marks like pits and nail holes, adding unique detail to each and every plank. The end result is authentic looking, character rich, rustic wood flooring.
Reclaimed generally refers to utilizing antique wood reclaimed from old buildings, barns and rural structures that pre-date the 1930's. Antique beams, dimensional lumber, and siding are hand picked and re-worked to produce a timeless antique plank floor using materials that have been given a second chance.
Smooth hardwood flooring offers either a more traditional look with species such as oak and a more contemporary or modern look with species such as maple. Smooth floors offer the ability to sand and refinish to remove scratches and change stain color, provided it has a thick enough wear surface.
The species of the hardwood floor that you select is an important decision. Different species will vary in hardness, grain, and color. Lifestyle, kids, pets, and sunlight can all be important factors in selecting your hardwood floor. Our experts are here to help you decide on a hardwood floor that will suit both your Home & Lifestyle perfectly!
